To the Sherlock fandom:

With all the love and hype we give Benedict and how disappointed we get when no one but us notices how hard he works for each role, It occurred to me that we have some extremely talented writers in our fandom. Writers who deserve some notoriety as…

Great idea. But let’s also have a betting pool, because I can pretty much guarantee which five will come in first. There are some damn clear winners in this fandom. (And some damn clear hit counts over on the AO3.) (Though of course we’d have to consider the recognized gems on LJ too.) Anybody know a good bookie?

This actually make me think of a question I have about the AO3 hit counters: In chaptered fics, does each hit on a chapter count as another hit on the fic? Because that could push hit counts up on longer fics. Another way longer fics get more hits is that when authors update, everyone reads the new chapter and adds more hits.

…this is not a critique of long fics or AO3, just an observation that hit counts are not always the best metric to use when evaluating the relative merits or popularity of a fic.

I think maybe it goes by IP address or session or something? My drabbles, at 221 chapters, only have 6k more hits than a twelve-chaptered thing I’ve got going, and only three times as many hits as a one-chaptered thing I’ve got.

And I know there were plenty of people who read every single one of them, sometimes all in one go.
